BUSSABA MASSAGE KHAO LAK
Police Boat 813 Tsunami Memorial Park
On December 26, 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Thailand’s Andaman coast, with Khao Lak among the hardest-hit areas. One of the most striking symbols of that tragedy is Police Boat 813, a patrol vessel that was swept nearly two kilometers inland by the force of the waves. Today, it rests exactly where the sea left it, forming the centerpiece of the Police Boat 813 Tsunami Memorial Park in Bang Niang.
The memorial park was created to honor the thousands of lives lost and to commemorate the courage of survivors. Visitors encounter the massive steel boat surrounded by landscaped grounds, remembrance plaques, and exhibits that explain the events of the day. The site is both educational and deeply moving, offering insight into the scale of the disaster and the importance of preparedness.
Open daily the park is free to enter, making it accessible to all who wish to pay their respects or learn more about the tsunami’s impact. Located just a short drive from Khao Lak Center, it is easy to reach and often included in local tours.
For travelers, the Police Boat 813 Memorial Park is not only a historical landmark but also a place of reflection. It reminds us of nature’s immense power and the resilience of communities that rebuild in the aftermath of tragedy.
